OVERVIEW

This course includes ice-based discovery learning and a brief digital classroom component to provide a deeper understanding of ice. We will skate at a slow pace, providing ample opportunity to discuss the ice and focus on:

  • Trip planning

  • Equipment and packing

  • Assessing ice at lakes and fjords

  • Safety

  • Skating technique and strategy

In the course you can also practice:

  • Self-rescue

  • Buddy rescue

  • Use of safety and rescue equipment

The rescue drills will be done first with dry suits on, to provide ample opportunity to exercise. Next, we take the drysuits off to experience rescues as they really are, including dealing with cold shock. After the rescue drills, participants can change into dry clothes in a heated expedition tent.

The next course is scheduled 10-11 January 2026.
